At the PG level in pharmacy education at VMU, there are different options to be chosen depending on the exact field that the student wants to specialise in - Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Analysis and Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry.

Quality in the pharma industry can be achieved better through the knowledge base and skill of Post Graduates. The concepts and advanced drug delivery systems taught at the master`s programs in pharmacy at VMU enable the students to know better, the newly developed drug formulations like controlled drug delivery system, ocular drug delivery, molecular based design, etc.

M.Pharm. (Pharmaceutics)

Pharmaceutics is the fundamental component of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. M.Pharm in Pharmaceutics at VMU deals with pre formulation and post formulation studies, bioavailability and pharmaceutical studies.

Career Opportunities

Students graduating from this course are presented with job opportunities in production and quality control, administration and management, marketing and research and development, in the medical detailing department in hospitals and in teaching.

M.Pharm (Pharmacology)

The M.Pharm (Pharmacology) course at VMU provides effective teaching and training in clinical pharmacology and provides opportunities to the students to undergo training in various hospitals and community pharmacy. It empowers the students to understand and be well versed in pharmacotherapeutics including pathophysiology, which helps the students in learning pharmacology. It enables the students to know about the recent developments and advanced copies followed in pharmacy practice, which will in turn help them render their services for the better health care of the community.

Career Opportunities

On completion of this course, students can work as Clinical Pharmacists, in R&D in the pharmaceutical industry, in herbal industries or in teaching.

 M.Pharm. (Pharmaceutical Chemistry) 

Pharmaceutical Chemistry plays a major role in the synthesis of new drug molecules. The synthesis of potent drug molecules with minor side effects can be achieved by a synthetic chemist. Development of new analytical methods using sophisticated instruments like HPLC, FTIR, HPTLC, etc., to check the quality and quantity of the raw materials and finished formulation is dealt with in the course of study. As a whole, pharmaceutical chemistry deals with the isolation, separation, synthesis and analysis of drugs, which has a wider scope in the R&D department of the pharma industry.

Career Opportunities

On completion of the M.Pharm in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from VMU a student can work in (R&D) in the pharmaceutical industry, in herbal industries, in a manufacturing unit of fine chemicals, in teaching or as a Government Analyst.

M.Pharm. (Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry)

The M.Pharm program in Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry at VMU covers all the aspects of the two fields pharmacognosy and phytochemistry. Pharmacognosy plays a major role in the herbal drug industry. It entails the development of new analytical methods using sophisticated instruments like HPLC, FTIR and HPTLC to check the quality and quantity of crude drugs and their finished formulation. Pharmacognosy deals with phytochemical tests and the manufacturing and analysis of herbal drugs, which have a wider scope in the R&D department of the pharma industry. Phytochemistry is the study of phytochemicals which are chemicals derived from plants. Many of these are known to provide protection against insect attacks and plant diseases. They also exhibit a number of protective functions for human consumers.

Career Opportunities

A student graduating from this program can work in R&D in the pharmaceutical industry, in herbal industries or take up teaching.

M.Pharm. (Pharmaceutical Analysis)

The aim of the M.Pharm (Pharmaceutical Analysis) program at VMU is to equip the graduates with the appropriate analytical skills required for the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. The objectives are to give the pharmacy graduates a good understanding of the special regulatory demands which govern analysis in the pharmaceutical Industry, along with a good understanding of the principles of pharmaceutical analysis, to study the application of pharmaceutical analysis with emphasis on both theory and practice, to provide the necessary supporting research methodology and demonstrate its application to practical problems and to ensure that graduates have an adequate knowledge base in pharmaceutical analysis. The course also covers the principles of formulation, chromatographic analysis, the physical methods of analysis, pharmacopoeial methods and the analysis of low level drug analytes. The optional modules are selected from pharmacological drug assay methods, spectroscopic methods of drug analysis, specialized pharmaceutical methods and the implementation of GLP/ GMP.

Career Opportunities

Students graduating from this program can take up positions like Quality Control Manager in pharma industries or in R&D in the pharmaceutical industry, in commercial analytical laboratories, clinical research laboratories or in teaching

M.Pharm. (Pharmaceutical Bio-Technology)

The M.Pharm course in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at VMU covers all the latest and outstanding developments in pharmaceutical biotechnology. When the two disciplines pharmaceuticals and biotechnology come together, they result in many advantages in terms of health care. This is possible through pharmacogenomics, derived from pharmacology and genomics (which refers to the study of how genetic inheritance affects the individual human bodys response to drugs). Biopharmaceutical drugs aim at designing and producing drugs that are adapted to each person’s genetic makeup. Thus pharmaceutical biotechnology companies develop tailor-made medicines for maximum therapeutic effects. Biotechnology drugs can also be given to the patients in appropriate dosages as the doctor would recommend based on the patient’s genetic structure and how the body processes and metabolizes a given medicine. Another benefit of pharmaceutical biotechnology is in the form of better vaccines. Biotech companies design and produce safer vaccines by organisms that are transformed through genetic engineering. These biotech vaccines minimize the risks of infection.

The PG program in Pharmacy with the specialization in Pharmacy Practice offered at VMU aims at imparting fundamental knowledge in pharmacy practice and clinical pharmacy practice, creating opportunities to the students to undergo training in various hospitals and community pharmacy and gain practical knowhow in pharmacotherapeutics including pathophysiology. The curriculum is so designed that the student has the opportunity to know the most current developments in pharmacy practice.

The degree is designed to train the students with scientific and technical skills to be utilized for a one to one interaction with patients, ensuring rational drug therapy.

Pharm. D emphasizes on the practice component of pharmacy like hospital & clinical pharmacy, community pharmacy and clinical research.

Career Opportunities
