The Vinayaka Mission’s College of Pharmacy (VMCP), Salem, established in the year 1982 is the pioneer institution of the Thirumuruga Kirupananda Variyar Thavathiru Sundara Swamigal (TKVTSS) Medical Educational and Charitable Trust. It plays a vital role in the field of Pharmacy education and caters to the needs of society by meeting the ever-increasing demand for pharmacists in India and abroad. The college that started with the Diploma in Pharmacy program now also offers B.Pharm (from 1993), M.Pharm (from 2003) in 7 specializations, Pharm.D, Pharm.D (PB) (from 2009) and the Doctoral Program in Pharmacy (from 2004). The college is a constituent college of Vinayaka Mission's Research Foundation Deemed to be University, Salem and is approved by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. Several hundreds of students have graduated from the college successfully and are practicing the profession of Pharmacy across the globe and serving the community at large.
The college has its own, independent, multi-storeyed, well-designed building located at the scenic foothills of Yercaud (a hill resort) with excellent infrastructural facilities including classrooms, laboratories, library and an auditorium. Salem popularly known as the Steel City is a geologist’s paradise, surrounded by hills and landscape dotted with hillocks. Salem is also the capital of Salem District whose other major locations are Mettur, Omalur and Attur. Salem has a vibrant culture dating back to the ancient Kongu Nadu. The name Salem is derived from the Sanskrit word “Sailam” denoting an area surrounded by hills.
The city of Salem is the focal point of the surrounding agricultural area. Salem is also very famous for its mangoes, stainless steel and handlooms. Its industries include textiles, cotton and silk apparel and chemicals. Iron-ore deposits and magnesite deposits are found not far from the city.
The town is surrounded by an amphitheatre of hills, Nagarmalai in the north, Jeragamalai in the south, Kanjanamalai in the west and Godumalai in the east. It is divided by Thirumanimuthar in the main division. The fort is the oldest place in the town. The district is well connected by air, rail and road networks. Salem is also at the base of the renowned tourist destination of Yercaud Hills, which offers breathtaking views, both during the ride up hill and from the peak. The temperature is between 25° C – 32° C.
